To examine the microstructure of a material, metallographic samples are made from a piece or part to perform light optical examination or scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The preparation of metallographic samples involves cutting, mounting in resin, grinding and polishing. Finally the samples are etched to visualize microstructural features.
