Corrosion and materials investigation for the manufacturing industry

The manufacturing industry consists of industrial and SME companies that make new products out of (raw) materials. Although this sector includes a wide range of activities , there is a common need for continuous development of products and processes to stay competitive. METALogic supports innovation by providing services regarding materials investigation, corrosion prevention and investigation.

The advantages:

  • Get your product to the next level by taking corrosion and prevention into account in the design stage;
  • If things go wrong, investigate why corrosion or material degradation occurs;
  • Get support from our experts to tackle material-related issues.

CONTRACT RESEARCH FOR THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

Corrosion is too often overlooked when improving existing products or designing new products. By involving material experts in the product design or improvement you can be sure that corrosion or material degradation is prevented from the very beginning.

Innovation projects (with financial support of VLAIO)

Are you trying to innovate but are lacking in knowledge about corrosion or material degradation to realize your project? VLAIO gives financial support to projects that expect a significant return on employment. We assist you in the process for submitting an application as well as in project coordination when more parties are involved. Our corrosion expertise is of course always at your disposal.

Other challenges that require a project-based approach

For all R&D challenges with regard to material degradation a project-based approach can be proposed in which the customer remains the owner of the intellectual property rights

STREICHER/HUEY/STRAUSS TESTING FOR THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

When manufacturing equipment, materials may be exposed to high temperatures.
Exposing stainless steels and nickel alloys for a long period of time may cause them to become sensitized, i.e. more sensitive to intergranular corrosion.

Streicher, Huey and Strauss corrosion tests (ASTM A262 or equivalent EN ISO 3651) are ways to quickly screen finished products for sensitization.

  • Streicher test (ASTM A262, Practice B)
  • Huey test (ASTM A262, Practice C)
  • Strauss test (ASTM A262, Practice E)

FAILURE ANALYSIS FOR THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

The best thing we can do with failure is to learn from it. The materials of your product or equipment can experience degradation in unexpected ways. We help you find the root cause of the degradation and offer ways to prevent similar failure from happening again. A failure analysis may include:

  • On-site inspection
In case the equipment/product cannot be investigated destructively – or as an addition to a full destructive failure analysis – the product or equipment can be inspected on-site.
  • Visual evaluation
The morphology of the material degradation is investigated visually (macroscopic evaluation and stereomicroscopic evaluation).
  • Cross-section analysis
Cross-sections are made through the material to investigate the (among others) microstructure, depth of attack, attack morphology, coating structure and coating thickness.
  • SEM (-EDX) analysis
SEM microscopy is used to investigate fracture surfaces or degradation morphology at higher magnifications (100x to >10.000x). SEM-EDX analysis allows to determine the elemental composition of corrosion products and coating composition.

COATING EXPERTISE FOR THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

Depending on the application, your product or installation might benefit from a coating that protects it against environmental factors.

How do you know whether your coating is the right fit for your individual case and expectations? METALogic provides both climate tests, (cyclic) salt spray tests and coating evaluations to evaluate the performance of your coating.

First, the quality of your coating is checked by an accelerated corrosion test which can be customized to your case. Afterwards the test panels/parts are assessed visually to detect onset of corrosion, blistering and presence of other defects. Furthermore, coating adhesion tests (cross-cut, pull-off) , DFT (dry film thickness) measurements and color and gloss measurements can be included in the assessment if relevant. Next to these corrosion and evaluation tests, METALogic also performs a range of mechanical and chemical resistance tests on coated panels or parts.

Ensure your product or installation survives in the long run by including our expertise in the process from the very beginning. We are happy to answer any questions and are eager to offer our services. So do not hesitate to contact us today!

Corrosion analysis sprinkler systems

Periodic testing of sprinkler systems brings fresh oxygenated water into the system. Steel piping in contact with oxygenated water leads to corrosion. The problem can be quite severe in case MIC [...]

We offer contract research for project research related to materials, coatings and materials degradation in general. Depending on the nature of the problem, METALogic assigns a team of engineers to the [...]

Materials selection

Based on our specific knowledge and many years of experience in corrosion studies, corrosion testing and failure analyses METALogic can assist you in selecting the most appropriate material for your [...]

(Cyclic) salt spray tests

Traditionally coatings are tested by subjecting them to an aggressive environment. This is for example the case in the neutral salt spray test (ISO 9227 NSS or ASTM B117). In this test coatings are exposed [...]
