Automotive industry
The transport sector and more specifically, the automotive industry is subject to continuous change. High quality demands go hand in hand with more efficient production methods and technological developments. In terms of materials, there is a perpetual evolution towards the use of new coating systems and high quality control.
As an independent party METALogic performs corrosion-related quality control on coated parts. We offer our electrochemical expertise for research and development and our in-depth knowledge with regard to materials science to investigate failure cases.
The advantages:
- Work with an independent ISO 17025 accredited laboratory;
- One partner for all your tests whether it is recently developed cyclic salt spray tests, continuous salt spray tests, etc.;
- Speed up the testing process and to learn more about your coating’s performance in the R&D stage;
- Our coating experts develop a tailor-made testing program.
(CYCLIC) SALT SPRAY TESTS
A range of accelerated corrosion tests are used to check the quality of your coating. The name of these corrosion tests comes from the spraying/fogging of salt (hence, salt spray test) and can also include thermal cycles or wet/dry cycles (cyclic salt spray test).
Almost every automotive brand has developed its own cyclic salt spray test standards. Below you find a non-exhaustive list of different tests that METALogic can perform for the automotive industry:
- SAE J2334
- JASO M609-91
- TOYOTA TSC 5209G
- VW PV1210
- VDA 621-415
COATING EVALUATIONS FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
After finishing the (cyclic) salt spray testing, the test panels/parts are examined visually to detect onset of corrosion, blistering and presence of other defects. Coating adhesion tests (cross-cut, pull-off) , DFT (dry film thickness) measurements and color and gloss measurements can be performed as well. Typical standards for evaluations include (non-exhaustive):
- ISO 4628-1, ISO 4628-2, ISO 4628-3, ISO 4628-4, ISO 4628-5, ISO 4628-8
- ASTM D1654
- ASTM D714, ASTM D610
- ISO 2178, ISO 2360, ASTM D7091
- ASTM D3359-A, ASTM D3359-B, ISO 2409
- ISO 16276-1, ASTM D4541
- ISO 4624
- ISO 11664-4, ISO 2813
- ASTM D3363
Besides these corrosion and evaluation tests, METALogic can also perform several mechanical and chemical resistance tests on coated panels or parts.
SUPPORT IN THE R&D STAGE
If you require faster test times or need other support from our coating specialists we are ready to help you. Electrochemical techniques can be used in addition to or as an alternative to standard (cyclic) salt spray tests in order to save time or gain additional knowledge about your coating’s performance.
